Fried egg plant

Wedding flowers

Look at these exquisite blooms, not to mention the perfectly romantic setting for a wedding. Those enormous white flowers with the bold yellow centres look to be gordonia to me, the fried egg plant (named for obvious reasons). It’s an evergreen tree that grows around 5m high and produces flowers over a long season, from autumn till spring. If you spot one in the street, you’ll probably also see a carpet of fried eggs beneath it. Rather than dying on the tree, the flowers drop off long before they’re past their best.
